I don't get it. The most beautiful graphics in the industry, a great storyline with great lore, and the lure of space, and Eve only gets 300k subscribers even after 10 tens of work. Some company makes an MMOPG with dancing Elves and ponies and it peaks at 9mil subscribers...
It can't be that wizard/fantasy is more popular than space-sci-fi. Aren't Star Wars and Star Trek proof that space-fiction has the larger following (as opposed to say, Lord of the Rings). And if so, why would 9mil players play with Elves, but only 1/30th of that choose sexy spacegraphics.
I don't get it. Can someone explain it to me? |

Malcanis wrote:Because the actual gameplay itself (point-and-click to move) isn't all that much fun. It's slow, frustrating and unintuitive. Pretty much everything about EVE is great except the way you have to do things in it.
Most MMOPGs have a point and click format as well however. Not much difference here.

EVE has such a hardcore reputation, and it is really hardcore compared to other games out there. The main problem is that people can't see that higher risks means higher rewards.
I dunno. A lot of MMOPGs have learning curves just as steep. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kbs1tW6w8R0 |

Fowler wrote:From what my IRL friends, that tried and quit eve, tells me. They simply don't like beeing denied game time by other players. Some found a stable economy to be too much work, but mostly they just found the griefing too much for them to handle. Beeing unable to travel, etc. Guess It's just not for everyone
So the fact that so much of the travel is restricted around the bottlenecks full of gankers/griefers.
Question is, then, without gate and station camping, then what would low sec and 0.0 pvp be then? |

BECAUSE YOU CAN LOSE.
Yep, its that simple. In other MMOs you are always the hero, EvE doesn't work that way. Pretty much. EVE attracts the kinds of players who enjoy overcoming adversity and loss, rather than the players who only enjoy accumulating their rewards.
Maybe this is it. In other MMOPGs their "wealth" is measured in there experience points. Hours of there work turn into better abilities, which can't be taken away and players feel like they have gained something.. That doesn't apply to Eve and most gamers probably don't like games where hours and hours of there efforts are turned to dust in an instant in numerous ways... I guess that's the fundamental difference in Eve and makes it unique.
Personally I don't mind loss as long as the ratio of loss to gain is even average loss = average gain. Having supercap blobs insta-hotdropping doesn't seem like its much of an end-game.

Here's a followup question then.
If someone made a Space game with Eve graphics, but WoW like game design would it do better than Eve?

Guess the answer to the original question is...
... that its multiple factors, not just one.
Perhaps a more vigorous polling for players that quit (or didn't opt for a full subscription after a trial account) would shed light on which reasons are the most prominent. The developers should make one and share the results with the community. |
